Oceanfront rental in Nags Head, NC

Spring 2022 Update

All the improvement is under sand!

This year will open with major improvements to the infrastructure. A new septic system was installed, replacing the original from 1984.

While we were moving sand around, we also cleaned the sand out from the underside of the house. We moved around 155 cubic yards of sand that had built up underneath the house. It was within a few inches of the underside of the house at it’s peak.

The sand had to go.

We used the smallest skid loader we could find. The Toro Dingo TX427 fit the bill. We were limited to about 52″ max clearance at the edge of the house, the Dingo was 44″ high.

The machine above we rented in the fall. It had seen better days. We rented and got the same machine in the spring from Sunbelt Rentals in Elizabeth City. It ran a couple hours and started quitting. We wasted 4 of our 7 days vacation with the unit. Sunbelt went and bought a brand new unit and brought it out to replace this one. BIG difference! They also done us right on the rental, giving us the extra time. However, I had to work it in after hours on the regular job. The final result was worth the effort, as we were able to remove all the sand from under the house.

There used to be a lot of sand in here!
There is a canoe buried in there!

All that remains is sand under the front deck. And the canoe that is buried up there from the original owners. Still want to get that unburied some day.

The front door got a coat of well-needed paint this spring as well. Deck post railings were reinforced where needed and we had an enclosure built around the AC unit to help keep sand out of the core.

Hopefully, this will keep the sand from packing into the core.
